A few kilometers from the city of Leiria, in a building located in the parish of Cortes donated by the Soares family to the Foundation and completely restored and remodeled by it, under the direction of Architect Daniela Ermano, the House-Museum of the Mário Soares Foundation and the João Soares Cultural Center are located.

A library was created in the Foundation building in Cortes and there are spaces for temporary exhibitions of the gifts received by Mário Soares during his public life as Prime Minister and President of the Republic.

A permanent exhibition was equipped with audiovisual media that presents a synthetic vision of the Portuguese 20th Century and the building also has a multipurpose room that will allow small cultural initiatives to be carried out.

In the garden of the building designed by Architect Gonçalo Ribeiro Teles, a tile panel entitled "The Christ of the Fishermen", by Hein Semke, a bust of João Soares designed by Fernando Marques, is on display, the car in which Mário Soares traveled the country in many of the electoral campaigns that followed the 25th of April 1974.

Cortes is a town closely linked to the life of Mário Soares' father, Professor João Soares, an eminent pedagogue who was a political activist and minister during the First Republic.

The João Soares House-Museum has a permanent exhibition and presents a vision of the Portuguese 20th Century in its political history aspect, framing the biographical paths of João Soares and Mário Soares.

The permanent exhibition is organized in two rooms with photographs, posters, films of the time and documents the main phases of the periods considered.

The period from the Monarchy to the First Republic: 1. The Crisis of the Liberal System (1890 - 1926), From the Estado Novo to Democracy: 2. The Estado Novo in the 1930s (1926-1940), 3. The crisis of the 1940s (1941-1949), 4. The Delgadista earthquake and the Second crisis (1950-1958), 5. Waiting for the end (1958-1968), 6. Marcelism - the final crisis (1968-1974), 7. The Revolution and its destinies (1974-1976), 8. The institutionalization of democracy (1976-1985) and 9. The Presidency of the Republic (1985-1996).

Temporary Exhibitions Since its inauguration on December 8, 1996, the House-Museum has held several temporary exhibitions, linking them with its cultural activities.

These exhibitions include displays of academic costumes received by Dr. Mário Soares in numerous Honorary Doctorates, municipal keys offered on numerous trips in Portugal and abroad, models of boats, nautical instruments corresponding to the express intention of making the offers received known to the public.

In 1999, an exhibition of caricatures was presented, created from a facsimile reproduction of caricatures presented in the exhibition held by Humorgrafe at the Presidency of the Republic in 1995, and also includes other works deposited at the João Soares House-Museum.

The House-Museum presented the painting exhibition The Paper Aquarium by Hein Semke between October 2000 and January 2001.

On June 28, 2002, the temporary exhibition "Culture and Tradition in Timor-Leste" was opened, carried out in collaboration with the Center for Documentation and Dissemination of the Culture of Timor.

In 2003, the Casa-Museu prepared the organization of initiatives that celebrate the 125th anniversary of the birth of João Soares and Afonso Lopes Vieira and the creation of the Cortes Philharmonic.

The Leonel Moura Exhibition dedicated to personalities from Contemporary Portuguese History: "50 Faces for an identity" opened on May 30, 1997.

The Celebrations of the 119th anniversary of the birth of João Soares with an evocative exhibition under the theme "João Lopes Soares (1878-1970)" and also included an exhibition of reproductions of engravings from the work Quadros de História de Portugal from 17 to 30 November 1997.

The Celebrations of maestro Fernando Lopes Graça's 90th birthday: "Lopes Graça, 90 years of his birth" organized by Casa Verdades de Faria, Cascais and with the participation of Orfeão de Leiria and the Academia de Música de Sta. Cecília from the 2nd to the 21st of December 1997.
